Buying a New Motorbike – What to Look For

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

It can be confusing choosing a new motorcycle with so many models available, particularly if you don’t know what you should look for. Every motorcycle falls into a distinct category or class which will help clarify the features that come with a particular model. We’ve gathered together some information on the different categories below to help you choose.

The most common type of motorcycle is the cruiser. These handle easily, long lasting and economical. This class also will give you the widest number of options for design and style. The basic design of a cruiser features standard seat, basic handle bars, and features designed for comfort. They are designed for easy turning as well as excellent handling even at top speeds. One shortcoming of cruisers is that they tend to be slightly heavier compared to other classes of motorcycles.

Many custom motorcycles can be included in the cruiser category due to their features included and the design. Drastically custom-made motorcycles referred to as choppers are another type of cruiser motorcycle. An additional type that you will see is the tour bike which is manufactured with an eye to comfort as they are used for long, often cross country trips.

Another type is the sports bike which are designed for speed. If you are looking for high speed rather than for comfort, this is the class of motorcycle to choose. These types of bike are unsuitable for long rides as they are designed for racing. Nearly all sport bikes are very light and feature a sturdy suspension. They offer the rider the ability of executing tight turns while at very high speeds.

A common alternative is the dual-sport style of motorcycle. This type of model features large tires and it can be ridden on any street or off road surface with ease. This combination is ideal for those who enjoy using their motorbike  in the town or city and on off road tracks.

People of all ages can ride off road bikes as as they can be legally ridden without a motorbike license, although they are not legal to ride on the streets. They are frequently used for climbing dirt hills or racing around dirt tracks and are usually called dirt bikes by those who ride them. These types of motorcycles do not usually have headlights or turn signals.

Coming to a decision on which category of motorcycle you want to buy is only the beginning of the selection process. You’ll also have to think about how much you can afford to spend, then compare the various models in the category you have chosen. Take your time and try out some assorted models as well as brands of motorcycles in order to see which ones feel the best to you. After narrowing down the choices you can test ride them then make your decision.

Motorcycle Motor Oil

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

If you are still using the same motor oil for your motorcycle that you use in your lawn tractor, you are making a big mistake.  Don’t spend so much time and effort on a high performance bike then skimp on the most important fluid, the motorcycle motor oil..  Some people do not know how to maintain their motorcycle.  It would be a good idea to first learn how to care for your motorcycle before getting your cool riding outfit.

If you are not certain about when to complete scheduled maintenance on your motorcycle, locate the bike’s manual. If you do not have access to the manual, the chances are good that the company has posted the manual as a web site or has posted the manual in a downloadable format.  Your manufacturer will help you identify when to do your scheduled maintenance for all aspects of your motorcycle including chain oil .

Using your owner’s manual, verify that you may use Royal Purple synthetic oil or stick with the conventional motorcycle oil.  Choosing the best motorcycle oil for your bike is a very important decision to make for all bike owners. If you would like to increase horsepower you will want to go with a synthetic motorcycle oil.

The procedure for giving your motorcycle an oil change are not much different, drain motorcycle oil, change filter, refill oil. Although you may be used to choosing the same oil for your motorcycle that you use in your car, make your decision based on performance and extending the life of your investment. Do not sew a patch on your tuxedo, that is to say that you should not buy a high performance motorcycle and fill it with the same oil that you use in your garden tractor, high performance motorcycles deserve high performance lubricants. The high RPM’s of the motorcycle engine require your attention for optimal lubrication, to ensure proper cooling and continued high performance. Do not forget to routinely check your fluid levels and tire pressure to ensure optimum safety and performance.

Motorcycles were created to be enjoyed, enjoy your ride to the fullest extent, but learn to properly take care of your engine so that you may enjoy it for many years to come. A couple extra dollars spent on quality motor oil may save you from buying another engine down the road.
