Basic Maintenance for Motorbikes

All motorbikes need certain amounts of maintenance so that they can be kept running in great condition. Even though modern bikes are made to be more reliable than ever, they still have to be paid some attention and cared for. To get the best performance and safety from motorbikes, simple, on-going tasks should be carried out. See the following guide for information on how to keep a motorcycle in top condition.

The Brakes

Brake fluid reservoirs should be checked regularly. Moisture is easily absorbed by brake fluid, which means it is best to use a brand new bottle of it each time. If you want improved brake performance, rather than using stock brake lines, install the braided variety.

Tyres

Make sure tyres are kept inflated correctly and check tyre pressure regularly. Until you get a feel for how much they should be inflated, use a pencil-type tyre gauge. You know it is time to replace the tyres if the tread is more than 2mm deep. If you do not, stability and traction will become and issue, and your safety could put at risk.

Shaft, Chains, Belt

Every time you fill motorbikes up with fuel, lubricate the chains with a chain spray. The shaft oil should be replaced every time you change the engine oil. The belt should be clean all the time and its tension must be check regularly.

Oil

Many people disagree on when engine oil has to be changed. However, generally speaking you will need to change it every 3 months or so. Fresh oil makes your engine last longer and keeps it healthy. By checking levels regularly, you will know when it needs to be changed. Keep the oil levels as close to the maximum level at all times.

Battery

Check your battery is charged to 100% once a month. The charge in a battery for motorbikes can be drained very quickly, so this means it is rather important to make sure it is topped up during periods when the bike is not being ridden often.
