Maintaining Your Vehicle: Drive Belts

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Belts are used in automobiles to connect and drive two shafts to the motion of a rotary by using pulleys in a series. Various accessories mounted to the engine are powered through the use of this rotary motion. Pumps, exhaust fans and air compressors are all examples of accessories powered in this way and are essential to the successful operation of the vehicle.

Identifying different belts:

V-belts are designed to provide high-traction power and to fit into a V shaped groove. Another belt that provides high-traction power is the Poly-V belt. This belt is flat on the outside but has many V-shaped grooves on the inside. The V-Link belt is similar to the above V-belts, but is open-ended and does not need meal clamps. Using a V-Link is a last resort for when other belts will not reach or fit as they are quite costly and will only carry a small load.

Flat belts function well at high speeds despite the lack of traction and their tendency to slip. They are much lighter in weight than other belts. The Timing belt is one of the most important belts and is quite different to other types. It does not require friction to function, nor does it it have teeth. It also has a much smaller power capacity in comparison with other belts.

What do drive belts do?

The purpose of drive belts is to drive a variety of external parts of the engine. Even though these belts are very inexpensive, they have the ability to put a stop to a functioning vehicle if they break. Without the belt to drive the vehicle component, there can be no motion or function from that component. One of the many accessories to rely on a drive belt is the water pump. The water pump is designed to circulates water through the vehicle’s system, thus keeping it cool. If the water pump stops working, which happens instantly when the drive belt breaks, it takes only a short time for the engine to overheat. The serpentine belt drives several components of the vehicle so if this one breaks, many functioning parts are immediately affected.

What causes a belt to break?

Drive belts are made of inexpensive rubber. Over time, belts suffer normal wear and tear and this can cause them to dry out or crack. The belt will break as wear and tear compromises the integrity of the belt.

Are drive belts easy to replace?

Depending on the location of the belt and your mechanical aptitude, it may be a simple process to replace a drive belt. A serpentine belt can be pretty complicated so it is probably best left to the professional mechanic. In most cases the serpentine belt will only need to be changed every thirty-five thousand miles. Both the serpentine belt and the timing belt can last up to sixty thousand miles.

Different Product Categories Of BMW Motorcycle

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

BMW motorcycles are produced by BMW Motorad, a German company that has been in this business since the early 1920s. The year 1923 marks the beginning of BMW motorcycles production, although it ran in parallel with aircraft manufacturing. Currently, they have plants in Berlin, Austria, Taiwan and China. The motorcycle categories produced under the BMW brand vary from 450cc to 1300cc cylinder capacity. While some of these models work for touring activities, others are sports, off-road and dual purpose bikes.

The fame of BMW motorcycles has increased over the years thanks to the many victories in prestigious races and competitions both national and international. One fine example here is the Dakar Rally, organized between Europe and Africa yearly. BMW motorcycles have always participated to this race, not to mentioned that they have won six titles in this competition so far. The BMW S1000RR design put BMW motorcycles among the bikes that participated in the Superbike World Championship in 2008 and 2009. Anyone who wishes to buy a BMW motorcycle can choose from several product categories.

First, there is the F series with a cylinder capacity of 800 cc; BMW motorcycles in the F series use either a belt drive or a chain. A smaller category, the G series has engines with a cylinder capacity between 450cc to 650cc. Featuring a chain drive, G series BMW motorcycles have one cylinder only. The G series is produced exclusively in Asia, with the 650cc engines made in China and the 450cc models in Taiwan. You can take precise measurements of these cylinders using Starrett dial caliper or depth gage. These measuring tools will indicate the readings in a digital format.

There are two models available in the R series: R1200GS, R1200T. They all have a shaft drive, twin cylinders and 1200cc capacity. The BMW motorcycles in the K series have four engines and a cylinder capacity of 1200-1300cc. The selection categories include K1300S, K1300GT and K1300R, or K1200LT and K1200R. And finally the S series includes the popular BMW sports bikes with an inline-four engine and a 999cc capacity.

Before you purchase any type of bike, it is essential to take some drive tests. Choose those BMW motorcycles that best correspond to your riding style, your purpose, preference and individuality. You can get technical information and consultancy in any BMW dealer shop, or online.

The cylinder capacity, the category and the overall technical features are the elements that determine the price. The 450 and 650 cc BMW motorcycles are the most affordable, due mainly to the lower manufacturing costs.

Great Features Of Scooters

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Scooters are a smaller version of the motorcycle but with some special individual features such as an integrated platform for the driver’s feet, footrests and a special step-through. Motorcycles are heavier and normally have larger wheels. Plus, scooters are a lot cheaper and easier to use as compared to cars and motorcycles. These are lots of other reasons that have led to the extensive use of scooters in crowded urban areas where public transport and driving are a nightmare because of the traffic.

The first scooters were invented before World War I and Lambretta and Vespa were to pioneers to start it all. In fact these models made the history of the vehicles we have today, and the first real progress became obvious during World War II when Lambretta and Vespa increased their popularity. Small wheels, level floorboards and reduced storage space were the features of these early scooters. Innovations like the four-stroke engine and the continuously variable transmission appeared lots of years afterwards.

Scooters are designed for personal transportation, and a cylinder capacity between 50cc and 250cc is suitable for the purpose. With this kind of scooter you won’t need beltronics pro rx65 radar detector for monitoring your speed. There are producers that manufacture larger scooters with more powerful engines than these traditional categories, but their usage is limited as compared to the small versions.

Moreover it is very advantageous to use scooters because of the traffic conditions and the rest of the legal obligations they involve. Just think of insurance, registration and licensing: the regulations the conditions are a lot better for scooters than for cars. So it means that getting cordless radar detector certainly will not be required.

For many Europeans and Asians, scooters have become the most practical urban means to travel and commute because of the easy driving position, the low cost, and the possibility to get everywhere in time without having to worry about traffic. In fact, while the sales of automobiles have decreased, those for scooters have gone up. This is justified by the fact that scooters involve a smaller investment than the amount needed for a car.

The reduced fuel consume makes scooters environment friendly and a real source of money savings, and such an advantage definitely influences a buyer’s choice. Hybrid scooters have also been designed over the last years, and they can be powered both by batteries and gas. The green alternative is more costly but the investment is recovered through the fuel savings.
