Motorcycle Helmet Laws State by State

Shorty Helmets

One of the most important accessories for a motorcycle owner is their motorcycle helmet , which should be worn when riding. The early 20th century saw the introduction of the motorcycle and the first helmets, which were made of leather. These helmets were made solely of leather and had two ear straps, just like the helmets worn by football player in the early days of the NFL. Now they are either carbon fiber helmets  or  they are made of fiberglass, which is tougher to crack and protects the rider a lot better than leather helmets.

Motorcycle riders should be wary of the motorcycle laws from state to state if they decide to take a road trip with their bike. There are different laws for motorcycle helmets and motorcycle gear across all 50 states in the country. It is also important for bikers to know the laws of states that border where they live in case they take their bike to work or travel across state lines for a baseball game.

Whether or not helmets are required at all, whether all riders must wear a helmet, or if a certain age group is supposed to wear helmets are all detailed in state laws. Some motorcyclists will also be required to wear eye protection, use daytime headlights, share lanes on the roads, get yearly inspections, what maximum speed to operate the vehicle at and various levels of intoxication for bikers. Other laws also deal with the playing of music and the wearing of headphones by the operator of the motorcycle.

Harley Davidson manufactures the most popular motorcycles in the country. The 1900s saw the company arrive in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and it survived through the Great Depression. Some state’s laws also require motorcyclists to wear full face helmets to protect their eyes and the rest of their face from debris flying up from cars in front of them. There are also state laws that deal with bikers wearing full face guards to protect their eyes and face from debris hitting them from other vehicles. Only three states in the country do not have laws regarding helmet use when riding a motorcycle. New Hampshire, Iowa, and Illinois are the three states without motorcycle helmet laws.

Pleasures of Riding and Talking with Bluetooth Helmet

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

So you can ride the bike, put on the helmet and zip off in the same fashion as tom cruise did in Top Gun. That is the first claim of the Bluetooth Helmet to fame. Before you know more about the style quotient of this helmet, one thing you must know about it is – It makes motorcycle reading a safe and indeed a pleasurable experience.

The need for people to stay connected even when they are riding on their motorcycles seems to be the inspiration behind the design of the Bluetooth helmet. Whatever one may say – This thought has its own advantages, and these days,it is not uncommon to see harley davidson riders zooming around and strutting this helmut.

What you do after wearing the Bluetooth helmet is your choice? You could speak to your loved one or your family member even while driving.

Long drives down highways can be pleasurable for you as well as boring. During those boring moments, you could listen to your favorite soundtracks by wearing the Bluetooth helmet. Once you wear this helmet you can stay assured that your ride will be safe and enjoyable.

Yet, there is something about the design of the Bluetooth helmet that does not appeal to all and sundry. First, its open helmet design can work for riders who drive their motorcycles only in urban roads where there is not much of a dust floating around. One problem with this gadget is that dust particles flying into the helmet could harm it.

If reports are to be believed, Motorola has launched the Bluetooth helmet design in collaboration with MOMODESIGN. The end product, made of carbon fiber, promises to take technology to a new level. People who tried this helmet have marveled at it’s abilility to provide uninterrupted conversation.

With a noise reduction mechanism that is good enough for you to stay immune to the blaring sounds of vehicles zooming past your motorcycle. Motorola’s Bluetooth helmet also takes care of any possibility of rains throwing havoc in your plans of having a good ride.

If 5 hours of talk time and more, and about 100 hours of standby time and more, is not enough, then what is? Clearly, the Bluetooth Helmet is here to stay, and if early indications from people, who have used it is anything to judge, this product seems to be one just made for fun loving motorcyclists.

How To Chose the Motorcycle Helmet for You

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Hardly anything else comes even close to the exhilarating feel of driving a motorcycle. Yet even the most avid of motorcyclists know that properly selected equipment, especially a motorcycle crash helmet, comes before anything else. To reinforce safety, many states require motorcyclists and the passengers that ride with them to wear helmets, whether they’re on streets, freeways or highways.

So before you get started with your 2-wheeled adventure, take the time to select a helmet to help ensure your motorcycle experience will be a safe one.

Fit is the foremost importance. Each person’s need is unique. The size and even shape of your head are important considerations. A helmet is practically a personal thing. Ideally, each rider should have a helmet specifically fit for that person. At the very least, the helmet should have a tight fit all around – from the forehead all the way to the back of the head. A good snug fit is when you can barely place a finger anywhere around the helmet. Helmet padding tends to compress 10 to 15% from its original volume, even more so for cheap motorcycle helmets, so be aware to make allowances for that.

While getting the best fit is important, comfort is also paramount. When fitting a helmet at the store, like a Bell motorcycle helmet, see if you can try it on for more than 5 minutes. After that much time, take off the helmet and check to see if there are red marks on your forehead and nape. Marks usually indicate that the helmet is too snug. While it may not be an issue for 5 or even 10 minutes, wearing a helmet that tight for half an hour may cause a lot of discomfort for you.

Check to make sure the straps to secure the helmet to your head are strong. Two ring fasteners are best. While snap fasteners are easier to buttun up, they tend to unbutton during an accident.

As much as possible, find a helmet that’s brightly colored like red, yellow or orange. This is so that you’re more visible on the road. It may not go with your outfit, but at least people you’re safer. If there aren’t bright colors available, at least get one that has reflective properties, such a reflective paint or has reflective tape all around the helmet.

While it is not required, having a helmet approved by the Snell Memorial Foundation ensures that the helmet design has gone through rigorous safety tests. To know whether the helmet is approved, you should check for a Snell logo sticker usually on the inside of the helmet.
